God was present and gracious at the Kentucky/Indiana Christian Fellowship Week the final week of July 2008, during which I was privileged to speak once on grace-gifts (charismata) generally and one time each on healing and prophecy in particular. This is an annual event hosted by the premillennial Churches of Christ. It was a pleasure finally to meet many of these brothers and sisters, gospel-loving, mission-minded and enthusiastic hymn-singing people whose spiritual ancestors were driven out of the mainstream Church of Christ during a dark and disgraceful time in the early 20th century.
Among these newly-discovered Christian family-members were siblings Cecil, Robert and DeWitt Garrett who had grown up as missionary kids alongside my mother and her Short siblings in Africa. I also got to know Alex Wilson, editor of Word and Work magazine (which just closed down, following its 100th birthday) and his wife Ruth; J.R. Satterfield (my official host) and his wife “Pie”; plus others too many to name.
It was a pleasure also to spend time with visiting gracEmail subscribers from several states and countries. Among those were my fellow-speaker Moto Nomura and his sweet wife, faithful gospelizers from Japan overflowing with the joy of the Lord; Louisville friends Charles and Carrie Belle Herd and daughter Mary Jackson; Western Kentucky University professor Dr. Mark Ciampa, whom I had the privilege to mentor as a teenager 40 years ago in Kirkwood, Missouri; and Graham and Esheron McKay from Spring Hill, Tennessee. Esheron and I discovered an almost-kinship in the fact that her brother (Hollis Creel) and my brother (Robert Fudge) are married to (Gravitt) sisters. Indeed, the world is small!
