IT’S A SILLY idea, isn’t it. With no direction, your car would jolt here and there, finally crashing into something that did have steadfastness. Some day Detroit may invent a car with another means of steering. But for the present, the steering wheel is an important part of the automobile.
Yet there are many men and women in this world who are trying to go through life with no thought given to a steering principle or guidance system. Such individuals necessarily meet the same end as our unfortunate automobile. Many of them are not even aware of their predicament. They bounce here and there, and wonder why they don’t get anywhere.
Jesus Christ offers the greatest goal possible — happiness and service now and life forever. You can reach the goal if you keep headed in the right direction. “Set your affections on things above,” is the way Paul expressed it (Colossians 3:2).
Not all “church people” have their steering wheel aligned, and some who once did have let it become crooked through negligence and neglect. What is your steering principle? Is it wealth? Is it status? Is it sensuality, or popularity? Jesus said, “I am the way” (John 14:6). Eternal life is the only worthwhile goal. Only Jesus can show the way.
