Now and then a gracEmail reader asks, “Who are you anyway?” The truth is that I am a broken conduit of God’s mercy with a life full of divine surprises.

I was born prematurely in July 1944 in a country clinic 20 miles from a small North Alabama town and was not expected to survive the first week. I am a grandson of Alabama sharecroppers on one side of the family and of African missionaries on the other — a kid who picked cotton to help buy winter clothes and grew up to practice law in Houston, Texas. I was raised in a conservative segment of a religious group that often thought it alone constituted the people of God, but became an adult committed to promoting the unity which all believers in Jesus share in the Savior.
Because it testifies throughout to the incredible faithfulness of our God, who sometimes uses a weak and undeserving “nobody” to accomplish his purposes, I invite you to read my spiritual autobiography titled The Sound of His Voice: Discovering the Secrets of God’s Guidance. The story includes persecution by misguided zealots . . . a graduate degree that led to a dead-end job . . . God’s miraculous provision through ten lean years . . . a day of fasting and an answer from heaven . . . how God used an obscure author to stimulate worldwide scholarly rethinking of a major biblical doctrine . . . two “firings” and God’s guidance to better things. This saga of four generations is guaranteed to make you laugh and cry and thank God for your own blessings! To learn more, click here.
