REPORT FROM NEPAL
The country of Nepal was struck this past Saturday, April 25 by a massive 7.8 earthquake, and significant aftershocks continue. The monster quake flattening homes, churches, businesses and other structures. CNN Cable News reported more than 4,600 people confirmed dead as of Tuesday, April 28, and the country’s Prime Minister cautions that the death toll may reach 10,000. Fox Cable News adds that 1.4 million people in Nepal are now without water, food, or other basic necessities.
GracEmail subscrIber Bob Chapman of Australia has for several years reported on certain evangelistic trips to the mountain kingdom of Nepal, where only 45 persons of every 1,000 are Christians and the population is 84% Hindu. Pastor Reuben Rai, Chapman’s fellow-worker in Nepal, reported damages sustained by Christians. Chapman explains that most churches in Nepal meet on Saturdays as that is their day off from work, and ten of thousands of Christians would have been in buildings all over the country.
Rai writes: “500 Christians are feared dead, 200 alone in Dhadhing near Quake center, 100 in Kathmandu, and 200 in rest areas. Total dead bodies collected exceeded 4000. More than 50,000 in intensive care unit. Thousands awaiting rescue and help. Hundreds still missing in Everest avalanche. No water in shops, no food and vegetables since market is not open. Because of fear of more quake, people still are in open field in cold and rain with their little new born babies, difficult for children and elderly. People are starting to have flu, fever and cold.”
