Foreword by F.F. Bruce “OUR MAN IN HEAVEN” sums up very aptly the central emphasis of the Letter to the Hebrews. The human family has in the presence of God an acceptable Representative — acceptable because He is most authentically one with ourselves, partaker of our flesh and blood, and acceptable too because He is persona gratissima with God, being the Son through whom God has spoken His final and perfect word to mankind. Our Lord’s present ministry on His people’s behalf “in matters for which they are responsible to God” guarantees for them an inexhaustible supply of grace and power to … [Read more...]
Our Man In Heaven: An Exposition of the Epistle to the Hebrews
Unfortunately, the Epistle to the Hebrews is little studied and much neglected in many circles. Yet it contains one of the most powerful gospel messages of any New Testament book. In this verse-by-verse exposition of the Epistle to the Hebrews, free online but now out of print, Edward shows how the unknown author glorifies the sacrifice and priestly ministry of Jesus Christ for sinners. Contains a foreword by one of Edward’s mentors, the late Professor F. F. Bruce of the University of Manchester, England. (See also Hebrews: Ancient Encouragement for Believers … [Read more...]

The Grace of God: 2. The Grace of God
The fullness of God's grace is beyond human appreciation, comprehension or full knowledge. The riches of His goodness cannot be expressed or described by mortal tongue. We can only attempt to describe it, and our best efforts will be a puny approximation. We can admire the beauty of divine grace, but we cannot really explore its depths. At best we can only stand in awe at what we see, and exclaim with the Apostle Paul: O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments and unfathomable his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who … [Read more...]
The Grace of God: 1. To The Reader
The more important a subject, the greater emotions and passions are stirred when it is discussed. And few topics -- if any -- are more crucial to true Christianity than the "grace of God." Its teaching, therefore, has almost always been accompanied by stormy controversy. Even the Apostle Paul faced the opposite perversions of license" and "legalism" -- with some charging him (falsely, of course!) with both errors. When the same message Paul preached is preached today, the results will be similar. One should not be surprised to find controversy, perversions in both directions, charges … [Read more...]
The Grace of God: 5. What Grace Is
The true grace of God is God's work in His Son Jesus Christ. We have an indication of this in John 1:17. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. This does not mean that there was no grace under Moses, or that there was no truth under Moses. Nor does it mean that there is no law under Jesus Christ. We have already seen that grace is not license. Paul says that he was not without law to God, but under the law of Christ (1 Cor. 9:21). Yet in some way, John is contrasting law -- as characteristic of the Old system -- to grace -- as … [Read more...]
The Grace of God: 3. Two Fundamental Principles
Before we notice what the Bible says about God's grace, we ought to know two fundamental and eternal principles which run throughout the Scriptures. One has to do with God's nature -- the other has to do with ours. God Must Punish Sin The first is found in Romans 6:23, and is simply this: "The wages of sin is death." In other words, it is an eternal principle which cannot be revoked that God must punish sin. Any doctrine, any definition, any concept which does not take this into account is wrong from the beginning. According to God's own revelation of himself in Scripture and in Jesus … [Read more...]
The Grace of God: 4. What Grace Is Not
Before we notice what grace IS in the New Testament, we need to see two things that grace is NOT. Both these errors are popularly taught and believed today. Sometimes one of them leads to the other. Sometimes people who have been taught one, and learned better, go so far from that error that they fall into the other extreme which is also erroneous. Let us see, then, two erroneous ideas about God's grace -- and see by the word of God that neither is true or worthy of our confidence, but that both deserve only to be rejected and warned against. These two erroneous ideas about grace relate to the … [Read more...]
The Restoration Movement Fulfilled In Jesus Christ: 7 / The ‘End’ of Our Efforts
The Jews of Paul's day were so busy trying to establish their own righteousness that they missed the righteousness God freely provided (Rom. 10:1-3). Their essential mistake was that they sought God's approval as if it were a matter of works. They were trying but they were not trusting. And they were left out while the Gentiles were entering in (Rom. 9:30-33). Many in the Restoration Movement seem to have made the same mistake today, with equally tragic results. Paul defended the Law, but he insisted that it had found its fulfillment in Jesus. He urged the Jews to see themselves standing in … [Read more...]
One Life, Death and Judgment
This encouraging booklet presents in simple fashion the good news about Jesus Christ from the Epistle to the Hebrews. Just as mankind is appointed to live once, die once and be judged, so also Jesus Christ lived one life, died one death and faced God's scrutiny in judgment. Because Jesus lived and died as the representative for all his people, his life and death count for those who trust in him. The outcome of our judgment is therefore certain, for Jesus is already at God's right hand in glory -- and he is our representative! ONE LIFE, DEATH & JUDGMENT By Edward Fudge Copyright 1978 … [Read more...]
